The Tourney

One of greatest things about the pickleball community is how open and welcoming it is! The goals of our tournaments are always, a little competition, some exercise, a bunch of comradery, and a whole lot of fun!

  • Tournament is being held outside so we have planned accordingly.

  • January is in the middle of Huatulco’s the dry season, so rain at the resort is not a consideration.

  • With average daytime temperatures reaching into the 30s, heat and UV are considerations in our planning.

  • Division – a specific skill level that copies the structure of what tennis uses to divide the players. We are offering the following divisions, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0. Players are asked to self evaluate or give us their specific evaluated level of play when they register for the trip.

  • Event – we are running three specific events, mixed doubles, men’s doubles, ladies doubles. Each event will have seven divisions, 2.0 to 5.0.

  • We are not running any “age” specific events.

  • Game – service point with games to 11 points and win by two.

  • Match – best of three games.

  • Draws – minimum of 8 teams per division or the division will be combined with another division based on player pool makeup.

  • Prize Money  – awarded to the top division in each of the three events. This division will have a minimum of 16 teams. Using the mixed doubles event as an example, if 7 teams register in the 5.0 division and 12 teams register in the 4.5 division, they will be combined for a draw of 19 teams. Pay out will be $500 Canadian for the first place team to be shared between the two players, $250 for the second place team, and $100 for third place team.

  • Great prizes for the top 3 teams in the other divisions, such as a racquet of your choice from Onix Sports.

  • Official ball – Onix Pure 2 Outdoor.

Tournament Structure

  • There will be no matches scheduled during the middle of the day.

  • There will be early morning matches ending around 10 AM and then afternoon matches starting around 4 PM and running until 8 PM.

  • We will have 5 days of match play with a minimum of 6 hours of play each day.

  • You should anticipate a minimum of 6 matches.

  • Refreshments and towels supplied courtside.

  • A memorable awards event will be held the evening following the tournament’s concusion

  • We are planning on 12 pickleball courts on 5 of the 12 tennis courts. These courts are under the lights and some are in the shade of palm trees. Such a beautiful setting, it will take your breathe away.

  • A dedicated stadium pickleball court close to the swimming pools that has a large amount of seating available for our high profile and championship matches.

  • Once this tournament is sold out, the players to have input on how many matches they want to play along with some limited input on when they are playing.

  • Draws will have a consolation round whose winner can come back and play the winner in the ‘A’ final.

  • If you are looking for a ton of matches, we can accommodate that.

  • Having run events in this resort before, we recommend that when we ask for your tournament input, you keep in mind that is area has a lot to offer with a wide variety of day trips off the resort (the downtown market is only a five dollar cab ride away) and of course tons to do on the resort.

Who’s Running This Show?

Kevin Doucet
Racquet Sports Professional

I found pickleball after playing a multitude of other sports, my racquet sport experience started with tennis in my grade school years. Badminton provided a college scholarship where my partner and I made the top ten national rankings for men’s doubles. After badminton, came squash and that became my career after five years of playing.

I became a head teaching professional at a club in Calgary, a position held for 13 years. Then worked for Squash Canada instructing other coaches and hosting National Coaching Certification Programs across the country. I attended the University of Calgary, to finalize my Level Four NCCP in what is now their Pedagogy and Coaching major.

As happens to us all, as time wore on and my body started to wear out, I needed a sport that was lower impact than squash and yet demanded a high level of racquet skill. I was introduced to pickleball in 2009. It was an instant hit for me. I could take my 25 years of experience in coaching racquet sports and apply it to pickleball. I really believe in this sport and I’m privileged to aid in its growth by providing coaching to beginners and developing players community associations and now fairly regularly in formal clinics.

In 2011 when Calgary hosted the first National Pickleball Championship, I started to focus on pickleball and ended up winning three titles (singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles) along with two very talented partners. Since then I have been hosting and tournament director for the Alberta Open in Pickleball at the Oakridge Community Association.

This new chapter is exciting as we bring the pickleball community to some great resorts around the world while combining a great tournament with an exciting tropical destination. As a team, we are the perfect hosts thanks to our technical knowledge and event management backgrounds combined with the practical experience on how to get the job done. Our best advertisement is our clients who are now our friends.

I hope you give us the chance to show you an unforgettable holiday!
