The Tourney

One of greatest things about the pickleball community is how open and welcoming it is! The goals of our tournaments are always, a little competition, some exercise, a bunch of comradery, and a whole lot of fun!

  • Tournament is being held outside so we have planned accordingly.

  • With average daytime temperatures reaching into the 30s, heat and UV are considerations in our planning.

  • Division – a specific skill level that copies the structure of what tennis uses to divide the players. We are offering the following divisions, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0. Players are asked to self evaluate or give us their specific evaluated level of play when they register for the trip.

  • Event – we are running three specific events, mixed doubles, men’s doubles, ladies doubles.

  • We are not running any “age” specific events.

  • Game – service point with games to 11 points and win by two.

  • Match – best of three games.

  • Draws – minimum of 8 teams per division or the division will be combined with another division based on player pool makeup.

  • Prizes for all divisions.

  • Official ball – Onix Pure 2 Outdoor.

Tournament Structure

  • There will be early morning matches starting as early as 8 AM. Tournament starts Jan 21, 2020.

  • We will have 5 days of match play, 3 days in a round-robin format and 2 days of playoffs. All teams make playoffs.

  • If you play in your division and in the Mixed division too, you can anticipate 4 matches per day.

  • You should anticipate a minimum of 15 matches, if playing in 2 divisions.

  • Refreshments and towels supplied courtside.

  • A memorable awards event will be held the evening following the tournament’s conclusion, January 25, 2020.

  • We are playing on 6 pickleball courts. If due to rainy day time weather, we will be playing in the evening, under the lights.

  • If you are looking for a ton of matches, we can accommodate that.

  • Draw sheets will be posted and updated throughout the day.

  • We will use the “next available court” approach to court assignment to keep play moving.

  • All matches are self refereed.

  • We want this to be a great experience for everyone, first time tournament players will feel very welcomed. Proper pickleball etiquette will be expected from all players. Fun is the first objective.

  • Communication at the resort is through “Whats App”. A private “What App” group will be created so you can stay in touch with other players and gets update on the tournament.

Who’s Running This Show?

Kevin Doucet
Pickleball – Racquet Sports Professional
International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA) Level II Certified Instructor
National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) – Level IV Certified (Squash) and Past National Team Coach

I found pickleball after playing a multitude of other sports, my racquet sports experience started with tennis in my grade school years. Badminton provided a college scholarship where my partner and I made the top ten national rankings for men’s doubles. After badminton, came squash and that became my career after five years of playing.

I became a head teaching professional at a club in Calgary, a position held for 13 years. I then took a position with Squash Canada instructing other coaches and hosting National Coaching Certification Programs across the country. I attended the University of Calgary, to finalize my Level Four National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certification in what is now their Pedagogy and Coaching major.

As happens to us all, as time wore on and my body started to wear out, I needed a sport that was lower impact than squash and yet demanded a high level of racquet skill. I was introduced to pickleball in 2009. It was an instant hit for me. I could take my 25 years of experience in coaching racquet sports and apply it to pickleball. I really believe in this sport and I’m privileged to aid in its growth by providing coaching to beginners and developing players community associations and now fairly regularly in formal clinics.

In 2011 when Calgary hosted the first National Pickleball Championship, I started to focus on pickleball and ended up winning three titles (singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles) along with two very talented partners. Since then I have been hosting and tournament director for the Alberta Open in Pickleball at the Oakridge Community Association.

This new chapter is exciting as we bring the pickleball community to some great resorts around the world while combining a great tournament with an exciting tropical destination. As a team, we are the perfect host thanks to our technical knowledge and event management backgrounds combined with the practical experience on how to get the job done. Our best advertisement is our clients who are now our friends.

I hope you give us the chance to show you an unforgettable holiday!
